About TEFL China

TEFL China (Teachers of English as a Foreign Language in China), is currently the biggest TEFL research organization and teacher association in China. It was formed in 1997, and, in collaboration with the National Basic Foreign Language Teaching Research Centre (NBFLTRC) and National Normal Tertiary Foreign Language Teaching Research Association (NNTFLTRA), was spearheaded the development of English language education across China, and has continued to expand its activities in this field. TEFL China used the name IATEFL China from 2002 to 2008, and was renamed TEFL China in April 2009.

TEFL China’s mission is to link, develop and support English Language Teaching professionals throughout China. From its inception, TEFL China has had an unparalleled record of organizing nearly forty TEFL activities annually. These activities include: English as a foreign language teaching research programmes; the establishment of national experimental schools; teacher training programmes at home and abroad; organising conferences, symposia, seminars and workshops; organizing national summer camps and national English contests for primary, secondary and college/university students respectively; materials design; achievement testing; consultancy work.

TEFL China has held four successful international conferences, enabling thousands of TEFL professionals from China and abroad to share their knowledge and expertise. In addition TEFL China has successfully collaborated with teachers’ associations around the world and has actively promoted learning and sharing amongst and between them.

In collaboration with the Chinese Ministry of Education, TEFL China started its first international teacher training programme in 2001. The teacher training programmes have, to date, benefited more than 800 Chinese grassroots English teachers who have received training in the U.K.

TEFL China works in close collaboration with provincial and local educational bureaus and schools. So far, 1800 teachers and researchers have become TEFL China members.  Eight hundred and fifty and National Experimental Schools are also affiliated with the association. This has made it possible for TEFL China’s research centre to be closely connected with local TEFL practices, and for the centre to produce two academic journals, Foreign Language Teaching and Research in Basic Education, a monthly journal, and English Teaching and Research Notes in Normal Colleges, a bimonthly publication.

To foster high standards of TEFL in China, TEFL China regularly administers national English proficiency tests and contests at primary, junior secondary and senior secondary school levels.

Through its many various activities, TEFL China has become a high profile non-government language education organization with an excellent reputation, not only among EFL teachers and researchers, but also education authorities at several levels of government.
