|
The China Branch of the International Association of
Teachers of English as a Foreign Language (TEFL China), established in 2002, is the biggest TEFL
development organisation in China. TEFL China evolved
from TEFL-China, formed in 1997, which, in collaboration
with the National Basic Foreign Language Teaching
Research Centre and National Normal Tertiary Foreign
Language Teaching Research Association, spearheaded the
development of English language education across China.
Since TEFL-China’s affiliation to IATEFL in 2002, it has
continued to expand its activities in this field.
From its inception, TEFL China has had an unparalleled
record of organizing nearly thirty TEFL activities a
year. These activities include: educational research;
establishment of experimental schools; teacher
development programmes; organising conferences,
symposia, lectures, seminars, workshops; organizing
national summer camps and national English teaching/
learning contests; materials design; proficiency
testing; consultancy work.
TEFL China has held three successful international
conferences, enabling thousands of TEFL professionals
from China and abroad to share their knowledge and
expertise. In addition TEFL China has formed good
collaboration with teachers’ associates across the world
and has actively promoted learning and sharing amongst
and between them.
In collaboration with the Ministry of Education,TEFL China started its first international teacher training
programme in 2001. These teacher training programmes
have, to date, benefitted more than 600 grassroots
teachers to be trained in the U.K. from all over China.
TEFL China works in close collaboration with
provincial and local educational bureaus and has so far
established 800 National Experimental Schools across
China. This has made it possible for work at TEFL China’s research center to be closely connected with
local TEFL practices, and for the center to produce two
academic journals, namely Foreign Language Teaching and
Research in Basic Education, a monthly journal, and
English Teaching and Research Notes in Normal Colleges,
a bimonthly publication.
To foster high standards in TEFL, TEFL China regularly
administers national English proficiency tests and
contests at primary, junior secondary and senior
secondary school levels.
Through its many various activities, TEFL China has
become an important non-government language education
organization of high profile and reputation, not only
among EFL teachers and researchers, but also at
different levels of government education authorities.
